Four St Catherine’s pupils represented the school and the London West Regional Swim Squad, at the ISA National Swimming Championships in Coventry.

Lydia Rodford (year 8), Amelia Mackie (year 4) , Roisin Neligan-Ayling (year 6) and Eleanor Attridge (year 7) all performed extremely well in their relay races, gaining medals for their efforts.

Lydia won her individual freestyle race, claiming her title as ISA National Champion.

We are so proud of these four swimmers who rose to the challenge of this prestigious and top level competition.

Star Pupil Spotlight

Gold - LydiaLast weekend Lydia Rodford won two gold medals at the ISA NATIONAL SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS….

‘ being a swimmer isn’t as easy as most people think- in the ISA Freestyle Race I could just get into the pool and swim as hard as I could! It all goes down to how much effort you put into training, the people that support you and your state of mind. I have to train every day. I cannot have a day off or my standards will slip. In Manchester, I used to have to get up at 4.40am and swim until 7am. So, getting up at 5.30am in London is a lie-in. I swim for Teddington Swimming Club, with people around my age. The training varies each session, but we would probably do about 350 lengths on average.

Waking up in the morning before the Nationals was the hardest part of it all, knowing that the next time I would be there, I would either have succeeded or failed! The car journey was two hours long and it is not easy to sleep when you’re so worried about what it was going to be like in your race. To calm myself all I have to say is ‘what is the point in getting nervous, it just uses energy, I have trained, what more could I do’. As long as I kept drinking water and focusing on my race, everything would go to plan.’

Going up there and waiting for the race makes me feel sick. I get so scared of how I am going to do it’s like my fear is taking over. As they shout LYDIA RODFORD, you know you are coming towards your race. They take me round to my lane, I started to try to look bigger than all the other people by jumping and warming up, it makes them feel intimidated and shows how in control I am of this race, When you hear the three whistles I always think when I get out of that water, I have to leave everything in it. GO everyone races down to the other end. I remember looking up and before I did anything I looked at my Dad just to make sure I had achieved what I came here to do. I had never seen him so happy. That was when I realised I had won the Nationals. I was the National Champion!’

Past Initiatives

Spain Netball Trip

During the second week of half term 27 keen St Catherine's netballers visited La Manga, Spain on a netball tour. Schools from all over the UK joined with us in this experience and took part in the training and tournament at the end of the week. Throughout the week everyone had to play with students from other schools, which was beneficial to individual personal performance levels. The U16A team came 3rd after an intense final game for 2nd place in the tournament. Many of the pupils who went on the trip improved their netball skills hugely and this was noticed by both the coaches, umpires and teachers. The umpires and coaches awarded Jemma Quinn with U15 Most Improved, Sophie Futter with U16 Most Improved and Eli Minansarow U16 Most Valuable Player. At the end of the award ceremony St. Catherine's took part in 'Netballer's Got Talent' which, after practising all week with endless team spirit, we won. The last day of the netball tour ended the experience on a high as we spent our last hours on the beach participating in water-sports such as windsurfing and sailing.

ISA National Swimming Championships

On Saturday 20th November two pupils swam in the ISA National Swimming Championship. They were selected, following their excellent previous swimming times, and both proved that they deserved their place in the London West Squad. Roisin Neligan-Ayling in Year 5 was awarded two Silver Medals for the Year 4 Freestyle Relay and the Year 5 Freestyle Relay. Jessica Warrior in Year 10 was awarded two Bronze Medals for the Medley Relay and the Freestyle Relay, as well as gaining an Individual Bronze Medal in the Butterfly event.

GB Canoeing Initiative Follow Up

Following the visit from GB Canoeing in May three of our pupils were picked to join the selection process for future Olympic hopes in canoeing. The pupils scored in the top 1% of all the female pupils who were tested in the country. Two pupils have subsequently given up the strenuous and highly dedicated training, however, Jessica Warrior in Year 10 is currently still showing great promise within the programme.
